B&K projects win Considerate Constructors' Awards

Bowmer & Kirkland projects have received awards in the Considerate Constructors Scheme and been described as “great ambassadors of the industry and excellent examples of considerate site management”.

A distribution centre for Next at Brookfields Park, Rotherham received a bronze award and a large office development at Colmore Plaza in Birmingham was awarded silver.

The Rotherham project was built on the site of a former colliery and at 1,100,000 ft² represented the largest construction of its type in the UK.

The £53.5m contract was completed in March 2007 and the presentation certificate stated: “The sheer scale and workforce size of this important site made special demands on the site team, but an efficient and cheerful atmosphere was created, with good attention paid to the aims of considerate construction.

“Despite the absence of immediate neighbours, site staff adhered to a strict dress code and ‘no radio’ rule, keeping all site areas and approaches clean and tidy. Security and professional presentation was also managed to a good level, making this site a great ambassador to the construction industry”

The Birmingham development was built on the site of the Birmingham Post and Mail and was particularly complex with five storeys below ground and 13 above. Comments from Considerate Constructors included: “Everyone affected by the works was approached by the Project Manager prior to commencement; letters were sent and information about the project was forwarded to them.

“The overriding feature of this site was the attempt by the site management to fulfil the good neighbour section of the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice as comprehensively as possible.

“The appearance of the site was always of the highest priority and the image of the industry was enhanced by such a site. This was an excellent example of considerate site management”.

Bowmer & Kirkland Director David Scorer, said: “The receipt of these awards serves to underscore our commitment to the aims & objectives of the Considerate Constructors Scheme

“We are extremely proud to have received awards on two such large & complex projects and we will continue to implement working practices that safeguard our workforce, the general public indeed all who are associated to our activities whilst also ensuring that we are respectful of all environmental issues.”

Bowmer & Kirkland was invited to become an Associate member of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme in January.

Only a select number of high performing contractors achieve Associate status in the scheme, which now registers more than 400 sites a month.

Associates are companies which have proved their commitment to improving the image of the industry through a high number of registered sites that have consistently performed to a high level.

Launched nationwide in 1997, the scheme was set up by the industry to improve the image of construction.
