Construction incorporated a Ground Source Heat Pump Recovery System which entailed drilling 27, 150mm holes 100m deep into the ground where temperatures are much warmer. Drop pipes covered with super-conductive material and filled with liquid were installed into the holes and the liquid is then pumped around, picking up the heat from below; this heated liquid is then used to heat part of the building.
Windcatcher ventilation units have been installed to provide controllable, natural ventilation in order to utilise the flow of fresh air for energy free cooling; various programmes can be selected for different seasons and a night purge will be used in the summer to cool the buildings.
A wind turbine for electricity generation and a rainiwater harvesting system have also been incorporated in this project.
